Summer School

Summer School at NorthStar Academy

At NorthStar Academy, we are committed to providing flexible, Christ-centred learning opportunities that support students on their educational journey. Our Summer School program offers a condensed, focused opportunity for students in Grades 10–12 to complete a course in July through our online Moodle platform. These courses are asynchronous, allowing students to engage with the material at the time that works best for their schedule—while maintaining the expectations and rigour of a full course experience.

Who is Summer School For?

Summer School is best suited for students who:

  • Need a specific course to meet graduation or prerequisite requirements.
  • Are prepared to dedicate consistent, daily effort to learning.
  • Thrive in an independent, online learning environment.

We encourage students and families to prayerfully consider whether this intensive learning period is a good fit. While Summer School can be a valuable tool to support student goals, it requires significant time and effort.

Key Details

Course Delivery: Online via Moodle.

Program Duration: July 2–25.

Format: Asynchronous—log in and complete coursework on your own schedule.

Course Load: Students may enroll in 10 credits.  This may include only 1 core course.

Orientation Course Requirement: All summer school students must complete our Learn Moodle orientation course, which can be worth up to 2 high school credits.  Students currently enrolled at NorthStar who have already completed Learn Moodle during this school year are not required to take it again.

Registration Priority: Given to students who require a course to graduate or move into the next level of programming.

Deadlines: All coursework must be completed by July 25. No extensions will be granted into August or the fall semester.

Before You Register

Summer School compresses five months of coursework into just four weeks. This means that students can expect to spend approximately 4+ hours per day on core academic subjects. Before registering, please consider:

  • Are you planning to work, travel, or volunteer in July?
  • Will you have reliable access to a computer and internet?
  • Have you spoken with your school counselor or advisor about your plan?

Courses NOT Recommended for First-Time Completion

Due to the time demands and complexity, these courses are generally not recommended unless you are repeating them or have strong foundational knowledge:

  • Math 10C, 20-1, 20-2
  • Science 10
  • Biology 20
  • Chemistry 20
  • Physics 20

Registration Information

Students enrolled in NorthStar’s Summer School program may earn up to 10 credits. This typically includes:

  • One core (non-diploma) course and one option course, or
  • Two to three option courses, depending on credit values.
