Students examine fundamental ideas about buying and selling, business, brands, trends, stores, and how this integrates with personal life. Retail marketing is the link between business and consumer. The customer is seen as an integral partner in business. Study includes the four Ps of marketing: price, product, place, and promotion. Students will analyze how each of these factors affects retail and merchandising.

Quality customer service is step one in a marketing plan. The course focuses on the who (target market and salesperson) and why (need, interest, service) of marketing. The sales process or sales cycle is studied as well as the job of a salesperson as compared to a sales clerk. MAM 1020 is a project-based course.
